I met sweet Nancy on the first day of our mission trip at the Tijuana garbage dumps. She was being held by a woman. I assumed this was her mama but since so few of the residents spoke English (and we only had a few interpreters) it was difficult to fully communicate. Over the course of our three days there, I would see Nancy being held by multiple different women, men, and even other young kids, both boys and girls.

Finally, on the last day when we were getting ready for the wedding ceremony, I went onto the bus to check on our beautiful brides, who were already dressed and waiting, and saw Nancy being held by another woman. Fortunately, this woman spoke English really well. I asked her if SHE was Nancy‘s mom and she said “No, Nancy‘s mom works, so we all take care of her during the day”.

I was so touched by this statement. It reminded me of the saying “it takes a village”. This was on full display in this beautiful community. They had so little in terms of basic comforts (and they lived in devastating circumstances with no running water, no electricity, no plumbing, no comfortable amenities, etc) yet, they did have a beautiful, caring, loving community where they supported one another as best they could. I learned a lot about selflessness and faithfulness on this trip and it’ll stay with me forever.
