Here is a bride, patiently & joyfully waiting on a hot & dusty old school bus, until the time of her wedding ceremony.
One night of the mission trip is devoted to a large wedding ceremony, where as many as 20 couples might get married by the ordained ministers with us.
These couples (many of whom have been together for years/decades, and may already have children) are too poor to pay to get married and they certainly lack the resources to have a celebration with friends and family in attendance. But there they were, waiting for many hours in wedding dresses (suits/ties for the men), flowers, makeup and jewelry on, wedding cake ready to be eaten, music to be danced to (and boy did we!), and a big celebration to be enjoyed by the whole village. We provided all of those things for them thanks to generous individuals who donated to us for the trip!
It was truly a beautiful night surrounded by so much love and joy. To see these people go from wearing scraps of dirty clothing with faces that have not been washed in a while, to smiling and beaming with pride wearing make-up, perfume, dressed all in white…like any other gorgeous bride…was truly a sight to take in. I feel very blessed to have been a part of it and I’m excited about documenting the experience through my art.
This work was created from an image that I took on my recent mission trip to Tijuana Mexico.
